I would like to host a couple (one duet and one solo) of best of the best songs on this site every week (with a couple of lines of pallavi/charaNams of these songs in Telugu font on the main page). One of these two songs can be a song that you have not heard in the recent times or it has not been online-hosted anywhere else yet. I started this section, "Songs of the Week" exactly 50 weeks ago and with this round of weekly picks, we have 100 songs in this section. Before I want to move onto a new section from the next week, I want to host two songs (that I like most) as a grand finale to this section. I want to do it as a tribute to the great NTR's dAna veera SUra karNa, which completed 30 years by this Sankranthi and it also happens to be my all-time favorite movie.

Narayana Reddy and picturized as a dream song on NTR and Prabha. This four hour plus long movie was completed in a record time of 43 days. Saluri Rajeswara Rao was the initial music director and he even composed the song, "E talli ninu kannadO" song and later Pendyala stepped in and composed the rest of the songs in the movie.
99		jayeebhavA.. vijayeebhavA	DVS karNa	Pendyala Nageswara Rao	C Narayana Reddy	l_link	V_link	Released in 1977 and this song was sung by SP Balu and G Anand. Earlier (almost ten years before this movie), there is a similar introductory song "swAgatam.. suswAgatam", sung by P Suseela and P Leela in "Sree Krishna pAnDaveeyam", which was again produced/directed by NTR.

The song was picturized on Raja (who died a few years ago) and Jaya Sudha and this dream song comes following their engagement. The actual hero is Mohan Babu. Mohan Babu, who gets insulted by Jaya Sudha rapes her just before her planned wedding with Raja and then she is forced to marry Mohan Babu instead. The rest of the story is about how she reforms him. This is one of the best, but ignored melodies from Sathyam during a period when he started slipping into oblivion in the wake of the domination of Chakravarthi and Ilaya Raja songs in the Telugu films. You can clearly see his default "dholak stamp" in this melodious song.
97		kuhu kuhU..kUsE kOyila	Dabbu-Dabbu-Dabbu	Shyam	Veeturi	l_link		Released in 1983 and the song picturized on Radhika. Murali Mohan is the hero and Pratap Pothan acts as a mentally retarded person. I guess during this period only Radhika and Pratap Pothan got married. I did not watch this movie and dont know much about the story and other details.

96		neelAla ningilO.. mEgAla tErulO	jEbu donga	Chakravarthi	Acharya Athreya	l_link		Released in 1975 and directed by Veeramachaneni Madhusudhana Rao (who gave many superhit movies to Sobhan Babu in the 60s and 70s). This beautiful song was picturized on Sobhan Babu and Manjula. The movie is about father-son relation and how the father (Rao Gopala Rao) re-unites with his long-lost son (Sobhan Babu) and about how a petty thief gets reformed. In his pre-mutyAla muggu days, I guess this is one of the very few movies that have a full lenghth role for Rao Gopala Rao. Rao Gopala Rao once reminisced that he had got this role bacause of his parichayam with Mullapudi Ramana, the writer for this movie.
95		gajje ghallumanTunTE	siri siri muvva	KV Mahadevan	Veturi	l_link		Released in 1976 and directed by Kasinadhuni Viswanadh. The song picturized on Chandra Mohan and Jaya Prada. I guess this is the first movie in the classical movie series (based on nATyam) from K Viswanadh. The context of the song is as follows - the hero wants to buy "gajjelu" for the heroine and she wants to buy medicines for his medical treatment (as the hero is in the early stages of TB) and both, unknowing to each other, end up on the stage as performers.

The story goes like this - Suresh has urban background and Vijaya Santhi is from rural and conservative background. After they get married, the hero realizes the greatness of Indian traditional values (after his visit from US), but the heroine becomes westernized and the rest of the story is about how they unite back.
93		UgisalADake manasA..	kotta neeru	Ramesh Naidu	Arudra	l_link		Released in 1981 and the song picturized on Deepa. It is the last movie of Kovelamudi Surya Prakasa Rao, the father of K Raghavendra Rao. Deepa is unhappy with her oafish and rustic husband, Chandra Mohan. Mohan Babu comes to their village as an officer and he eyes on Deepa. This song comes as a backdrop song on Deepa, whose mind is split between the loyalty toward her innocent husband and the lusty initiatives by Mohan Babu.

Sathyam used to be called "Dholak Sathyam", when he was working as an assistant to TV Raju and Aadi Narayana Rao and you can see his fabulous dholak stamp in this melodious song.
91		pUlu gusagusa lADEnani	SreevAru-mAvAru	GK Venkatesh	C Narayana Reddy	l_link		Released in 1973 and the song was picturized on Krishna. Vanisree is the heroine in this movie. Asha Bhonsle sang the original complicated tune (of RD Burman), "Daiya yeh main kahan phasi" in the Jeetendra starrer, Caravaan (and you can listen to this song in Jeetendra section on the Hindi Songs page). But GK Venkatesh made the song more hilarious with simplifying the tune in Telugu.

89		tUrupu telatela vaarakanE	SreevAri muchhaTlu	Chakravarthi	Dasari Narayana Rao	l_link		Released in 1980 and this ANR home production movie was directed by Dasari. The song was picturized on both heroines. ANR loves Jaya Prada, but is forced to marry his maradalu, Jaya Sudha.. but with an approval from Jaya Sudha, he marries Jaya Prada too. It was the period when Dasari used to come up with a different concept for each movie and surprisingly, majority of those concepts used to gel with the Telugu audiences very well.

The movie is a family drama with misunderstandings between the in-laws and the couple as well. I watched this movie in my middle school days and I dont recall the whole movie now, but I remember one scene.. Jaya Prada defeats Krishna in Tennis game when they are in college and after their wedding, Krishna takes a sweet revenge by defeating her in the table tennis game in their bedroom on the first night.
87		mrOgindi veeNa	zamindaaru gAri ammAyi	GK Venkatesh	Dasaradhi	l_link		Released in 1975 and directed by Singeetham Srinivasa Rao. The song was picturized on Sarada. Ranganadh and Sarada play the hero and heroine roles in the movie.

The male singer is P Jaya Chandran (not KJ Yesudaasu, as many people are mistaken with their similar voices). I have not seen this movie. 85		idE nA modaTi prEmalEkha..	Swapna	Sathyam	Rajasri	l_link		Released in 1980 and directed by Dasari. Dasari introduced Raja (who died a few years ago) and the hindi heroine, Swapna as hero and heroine with this movie. It was the best period for Dasari, as he was directing all top Telugu stars as well as introducing some new faces at the same time with a high success rate. It is amazing to see how some of his movies (in the late 70s and in the early 80s) have some of the best Telugu melodies, though he used to direct more than 10 movies per year during that phase.

Chalam dons the title role and I guess Sobhan Babu is a guest star in the movie. I have not seen this movie, but I recall that the movie goes around Chalam and a kid, played by Baby Roja Ramani.
83		malle pandiri neeDa lOna	mAyadAri malligADu	KV Mahadevan	Acharya Athreya	l_link		Released in 1973 and directed by Adurthi Subba Rao. The song was picturized on Jayanthi (Krishna and Manjula in the back-drop), who plays as a sister to Krishna in a widow role. Krishna works as a palEru for Nagabhusham. Padmanabham, a fake swamiji gets Nagabhushnams widow sister pregnant and in retatiliation, Nagabhushanam kills him and frames Krishna in the murder case. In the end, Krishna gets acquitted, when Anjali confesses in the court that her husband is the real murderer.

The song was picturized on the lead pair, Krishna and Geetha. Tasting a super success with "annadammula savAl" with a combination of Krishna-Rajani Kanth earlier, the producers came up with this movie repeating the same hero-duo and the same movie and music directors (but I guess the movie was an average movie). I consider this song to be one of the best romantic, melodious rain songs.
81		manishE maNideepam..	manchu pallaki	Rajan-Nagendra	Sri Sri	l_link		Released in 1982 and it is a directional debut for Vamsi, who until then used to be an assistant to K Viswanadh. The movie was picturized on Chiru, Suhasini and other supporting actors. Yandamuri provided the screen-play to this movie and the association between Chiru and Yandamuri started with this movie and continued for the next ten years or so. Suhasini is a heart patient in the movie, who dies in the end.

Radhika plays double roles (good and negative) and Chandra Mohan is the hero in the movie. This teasing song was picturized on Radhika (in the negative role) and Chandra Mohan. Though the movie was a commercial fiasco and it went unnoticed, it has a few good songs.
79		oka mATundi..	I Love You	Sathyam	Veeturi	l_link		Released in 1979 and the song picturized on Suvarna and Chiru. Chiru plays as a womanizer, who later meets with an accident that confines him to a wheel chair and is destined to marry one of the girls he has used and thrown. The rest of the movie is about how Chiru gets remorseful for his past deeds and how the heroine gets him back to normal. We often think that Chiru has musical hits only with Chakravarthi and Ilaya Raja until the late 80s. But surprisingly, he has a handful of melodies with Sathyam as well in the beginning of his career and the last movie in their combination is "mahA nagaramlO mAyagADu", released in 1984.

This wonderful romantic song was penned down by Veturi and picturized on Ranganadh and Prabha. Teh music directors used the original Kannada tune in Telugu as well. Pl. refer to the song #14 on this page for more details on the movie.
77		andamaina lOkamani rangu rangulu unTAyani..	toli kODi kUsindi	MS Viswanathan	Acharya Athreya	l_link		Released in 1979 and directed by K. Bala Chandar. The song picturized on Seema and Saritha. Seema (who later married the Malayalam director, IV Sasi) plays the main role in the movie, while Madhavi, Sarath Babu and Saritha play the supporting roles. Seema helps out all hapless victims from the clutches of the evil people like Jeeva and Prasad Babu in this village back-dropped movie. Sarath Babu and Seema like each other in the beginning, but as Seema is busy helping out the people around and doesnt let Sarath Babu know that she loves him and becasue of her late response, she loses him to Madhavi, a widow.

76		adigO navalOkam	veerAbhimanyu	KV Mahadevan	Arudra	l_link		Released in 1965 and directed by Victory (Veeramachaneni) Madhusudhana Rao and this lovely song was picturized on Sobhan Babu and Kanchana. If I were to choose only one duet from the 60s, I would right away pick up this song with no second thoughts. NTR, Kantha Rao, Sobhan Babu and Kanchana play the roles of Krishna, Arjuna, Abhimanyu and Uttara respectively. Sobhan Babu is superb in the role of Veerabhimanyu and I can not imagine any one else in that role! Starting with this movie, Sobhan Babu (who until then was struggling with the second hero roles) established as a full-fledged hero and as a steady peer to Krishna. Madhusudhana Rao helped out Sobhan Babu in his critical periods with some other superhit movies like "manushulu mArAli" in the late 60s and "malle puvvu" in the late 70s.
75		sirimalle pUvA	padahArELLa vayasu	Chakravarthi	Veturi	l_link		Released in 1978 and directed by K Raghavendra Rao and the song was picturized on Sridevi. While Kamal Hassan and Rajani Kanth play the male lead roles in the original Tamil movie (directed by Bharathi Raja), Chandra Mohan and Mohan Babu play those roles in Telugu. Although the credit to this song should actually go to Ilaya Raja (the original composer), Chakravarthi came up with some original tunes for the rest of the songs in the movie. Sridevi became the most sensational Telugu glamorous heroine, starting with this movie.

73		nuvvEnA.. sampangi	guppeDu manasu	MS Viswanathan	Acharya Athreya	l_link		Released in 1979, directed by K Bala Chandar and the song picturized on Narayana Rao and Saritha (who were introduced to the cine field by Bala Chandar with antulEni katha and marO charitra movies respectively). The story is about a teenager (Saritha), who gets pregant by a man (Sarath Babu) of her uncle age under some unfortunate cimcumstances. Though it looks like a modern day TV Serial, it was a bold, novel, and poignant story narrated by Bala Chandar in the late 70s.

The movie is a family-suspense thriller. If I recall it correctly (which I saw in my 7th grade), Subha is a rich lady and her dayAdulu are after her money/property and to get rid of her, they hire a contract killer (Krishna), who eventually turns out to be a detective/cop that actually comes there to rescue the heroine from her evil relatives. I consider this song to be one of his top ten duets in the early 70s.
71		edutA neevE..edalOnA neevE	abhinandana	Ilaya Raja	Acharya Athreya	l_link	V_link	Released in 1988 and the song picturized on Karthik. The song penned down by Athreya. Interestingly, the same tune was used (but sung by S Janaki) by Ilaya Raja in anvEshana movie in 1985. This movie was recently remade by Boney Kapoor as "Bewafaa" with Akshay Kumar, Kareena Kapoor and Anil Kapoor in the roles of Karthik, Sobhana and Sarath Babu respectively.

67		mabbE masakEsindilE	vayasu pilichindi	Ilaya Raja	Veeturi	l_link	V_link	Released in 1978 and directed by Sridhar, a popular Tamil director. Picturized on Kamal Hassan and Jaya Chitra. It is a quardangular love story - Kamal Hassan loves Sri Priya, whom Rajani Kanth in turn loves. Jaya Chitra does the one-sided love with Kamal Hassan. Under some inevitable circumstances, "roop tEra mastAna" happens between Kamal Hassan and Jaya Chitra (while this song comes as a back-drop one during that scene).

It seems that it is a heroine-oriented movie and I have no idea about the film or the song details except that the music is by Aakula Appala Raju, who seems to have worked as an assistant to other music directors during the most of his career. Probably this is one of very few Telugu movies for which he was a main music director and I can recall only this song when his name springs to my mind.
65		tolisanje vELalO..	seetA rAmulu	Sathyam	Dasari Narayana Rao	l_link		Released in 1980, directed by Dasari and the song picturized on Krishna Raju. The movie is about the hero (Krishnam Raju) who brings a change in his arraogant wife (Jaya Prada, who is his boss at work). Dasari is the only one director, who experimented with a wide spectrum of music direcors from the mid 70s until the early 80s and he quotes that his favorite music directors are Sathyam and Ramesh Naidu.

Sathyanarayana and Chandra Mohan play the title roles. This song is the first duet song for SP Sailaja, who was then a teenager. Vijaya Nirmala always encouraged Ramesh Naidu and extracted a very melodious music out of him in most of her movies. Ramesh Naidu, an exceptional music director known for his melodious songs always used to take the lyrics first and then gave the tune to the lyrics. His last movie was a Chiru starrer, "swayam kRushi" in 1987.
63		EdO.. EdO annadi	mutyAla muggu	KV Mahadevan	C Narayana Reddy	l_link		Released in 1975, directed by Bapu and the song picturized on Sridhar and Sangeetha. This movie is a debut movie for the character actress, Sangeetha. I consider this song to be the best solo song from the singer, Rama Krishna.

While Vani Jayaram sings all the song, Balu just gives a beautiful AlApana. The movie story goes like this - Rama Krishna first loves Kannada Manjula and later is forced to marry Vanisri. He can not forget his first love and distances his wife, while the latter patiently awaits a positive change in him. When the hero comes to know that his first love is happily married and is enjoying her married life, he realizes his mistake and decides to get closer to his wife. 61		priyatamA.. nA hrudayamA	prEma	Ilaya Raja	Acharya Athreya	l_link	V_link	Released in 1989, produced by Suresh banner and directed by Suresh Krishna (probably his debut movie in Telugu). Picturized on Venkatesh and the hospitalized heroine, Revathi. I guess this is the last movie for the great lyricist, Acharya Aathreya. Though it was released in 1989, Venkatesh got the best actor (Nandi) award for the year 1988.

This is the first movie with Krishna-Rajani Kanth combination. The elder son of Krishna, Ramesh Babu plays as teenager Krishna in the movie. I consider this song to be one of the best (top five) "hushAru golipE pATalu" in the 70s/80s.

57		kukukU..kOkilA..rAvE	sitAra	Ilaya Raja	Veturi	l_link		Released in 1984 and directed by Vamsi. Penned by Veturi and picturized on Suman and Bhanupriya. I guess this is the second movie for Vamsi, right after his debut movie, manchu pallaki.

56		nA hrudayamA..	priya	Chakravarthi	Acharya Athreya	l_link		Released in 1981 and picturized on Chiru, Swapna and Radhika (Balu, Janaki and Suseela voices respectively). I would say that this is one of the best melodies in the early years of Chiru-Chakravarthi combination. This song is part of my selection of the best melodies of Chakravarthi (who is often underrated by the critics, because his mass tunes always eclipsed his melodies) on this section. This is a second movie for Chiru-Radhika, right after the hit movie, nyAyam kAvAli. This movie is a triagular love story between Chandra Mohan, Chiru and Radhika. Chiru is at the sacrificial end (by committing suicide after he unites the other two in the climax).

Initially this song was supposed to be in the place of "sirimalle neevE" song in pantulamma movie, but later the producers had an issue with it and then Dasari took this tune and the same original music director for this movie. Though the movie was a flop, it is best remembered for three excellent songs in the movie.

I dont think it was a hit movie, but it has very good melodies. Puhalendi, the "mAnasa putruDu" of KV Mahadevan always wanted to remain as an assistant to his guruvu gAru all his life, albeit he had some opportunities as a solo music director at the peak of his career. Though both are Malayalis and dont have a good grip on Telugu language, the duo composed THE BEST melodies incessantly for three decades in the Telugu film history.

It is a triangular love story with Sarath Babu at the sacrificial end. It was a remake of a Tamil movie by Bhagya Raja and then again was remade by Bapu himself into Hindi as "Woh saath din", an Anil Kapoor starrer in the mid 80s. Another Hindi movie, "Hum dil de chuke sanam" (released in 1999) again has striking similaries with this movie with the same theme.

Albeit he got a tag of "Dappu daruvu" music director for most of his average-rated tunes in the 80s, he in fact gave a few of the excellent melodies that came in the mid and late 70s (at the beginning of his career, for most of Sobhan Babu movies) and this song is one of them. I want to bring forward all those eclipsed melodies (amidst his plenty of Dappu songs) of Chakravarthi on this site.

It seems to me that Rajan-Nagendra re-entered the Telugu film industry with this movie after their initial stint in the mid 60s with the movies like "aggi-piDugu", "khaidee kannayya" etc. Their last movie in Telugu might be "appula appA rAo" or "prEma khaidee", if I am not mistaken. Starting from pUja until mUDu muLLu, they showered the Telugu Film musical world with some of the best melodies in the late 70s and Early 80s.

This is one of the earliest Telugu (though it is a dubbed one) movies with a concept of hero having the psychopathic instincts.
