The song was picturized on Krishna and Vijaya Nirmala. Late Dr. Prabhakara Reddy was the story-writer for this family melodrama. The story is about the strength of four brothers (SVR,Gummadi, Prabhakar Reddy and Krishna) staying united in spite of the havoc created by two ladies (Jamuna, an vindictive, ex-lover of Gummadi; B Saroja, a snobbish wife of Prabhakar Reddy). Krishna quotes that this is one of his top ten films. Naresh appears as an an elder son of Gummadi/Devika and Jaya Sudha (her debut movie) as a teenager, an illegitimate child of Gummadi/Jamuna. | | 83 | | Sarada.. nanu chEragA | SArada | Chakravarthi | C Narayana Reddy | l_link | V_link | Released in 1973, produced by Kranthi Kumar and directed by K Viswanadh. The song was picturized on Sobhan Babu and Sarada. Sobhan Babu (in a double role), Sarada, Jayanthi and Sathynaraya play the vital roles in the movie. The story is about an innocent village girl (Sarada), who believes that her husband (Sobhan Babu, who dies in a violent storm) is still alive and about a kind-hearted couple (Sobhan Babu and Jayanthi). Apart from this movie, Chakravarthi worked on one more movie (Krishnanm Raju starrer, alluDu paTTina bharatam) with K Viswanadh. Chakravarthi ensconced his position as a consistent and highly successful music director starting with this movie. |

The movie is in the backdrop of a feudal system in old Telangana area. The main character is Prabhakar Reddy, who is a feudal lord of a small village in Nizam Telangana. He has a wife and daughter. He also has an unofficial daughter, Kanchana (through an illicit relation) and he treats her as a slave and pimps her to other land-lords for returned favors, obviously against her will but she is helpless. Then enters a Brahmin boy from the Andhra region, called Sarangapani, whom Reddy affectionately calls "pantulu". The story is all about feudal attrocities culminating in a mass revolt by the masses who put an end to the fedual system in the village. The movie was based on a popular novel with the same name written by Dasarathi Rangacharya who is the brother of the popular lyric writer, Dasarathi (Krishnamacharya). The song was picturized on Sobhan Babu and Jaya Chitra. Sobhan Babu perfectly fits the role of sOggADu (in spite of being a rustic illiterate, he is fondly called as sOggADu by his fellow villagers as he does every job neatly). Jaya Sudha plays as a second heroine and Sathyanarayana as a cruel villain. I read somewhere that the movie was initially meant for ANR, but Rama Naidu had to start the movie with one of his favatorite heroes (Sobhan Babu) due to ANRs unavailability (ANR was off to US for his by-pass surgery during that time and hence none of his pictures were released in 1975). 1975 was one of the best years for Sobhan Babu, as he had super hits such as bali peeTham, jEbu donga and jeevana jyOti and ofcourse sOggADu. | | 79 | | ghallu ghalluna kAli gajjelu.. | chal mOhan rangA | B Sankar (Ghazal Sankar) | Jaladi Raja Rao | l_link | | Released in 1978 and directed by B Bhaskar. It is a family/action drama- Krishna re-unites his parted parents, Gummadi and Shavukaru Janaki and puts a check on villains (Prabhakar Reddy and his son, Mohan Babu), who want to usurp their properties. Krishna fools the heroine by appearing to her in double roles (as a rustic ruffian and as a company manager) and this song is between the ruffian character and Deepa. Balu once mentioned (in pADutA teeyagA program, where a participant sang this song) that the music director, B Sankar used to be called as "Ghazal Sankar"... Mistri. The song was written by Dr. C Narayana Reddy and picturized on NTR and Vanisri. NTR, Vanisri and Rama Krishna play the roles of Vishnu, Lakshmi and Siva in this mythological movie. Teh movie starts off with the "sAgara madhanam" episode, where Vishnu tricks the demons and gets the nectar to the angels. Siva later boasts that no one can trick him. Vishnu teases Siva with an apsarasa mAyArUpam and seduces Siva. Siva then gets upset and challenges that one day Vishnu would also get infatuated with woman`s seduction. Later Vishnu consoles Lakshmi, when Siva burns their son (Manmadha) into ashes. Then Lakshmi gets upset and goes to the earth and sets up a queendom, where there would be no male domination. Later Vishnu also comes down as maScheendra. Siva also is born as a human being and turns as a disciple of maScheendra. maScheendra now goes to the queendom and settles down there as the queen`s husband. Siva goes there to release him from the human bonds, but the queen doesn`t let him go. Finally it all turns out to be "Vishnu mAya" and all three happily return to their homes (vaikunTham and kailAsam respectively). No wonder, the movie with this kind of confused story was a miserable fiasco at the box-office. If I were to choose the top five melodies of Sathyam, I would definitely include this song in the list. | | 67 | | jAbili andam kannA.. | muttaiduva | KV Mahadevan | C Narayana Reddy | l_link | | Released in 1979 and directed by A.C.Trilokachandar. The song was picturized on Krishna and Jaya Chitra. Nagabhushanam tries to conceal the fact his own daughter is a bAlya vitantuvu and makes the public believe that his niece, Jaya Chitra is the bAlya vitantuvu instead. The heroine grows up with an inferiority complex that she can never be married again and our hero, Krishna is after her. Finally, Krishna proves the facts and marries Jaya Chitra. I think this is the last movie for the veteran character actress, Santha Kumari (her husband, late Pasupuleti Pullaiah also acted as her husband in the movie in the grand parents roles). |

The story is about an officer who turns as a decoit to take revenge on the society that doesnt let his father (who is a dangerous decoit in the past and later gets reformed after serving a sentence) live in peace. Sathyanarayana plays the father role and Nuthan Prasad the villain role. Though the movie looks like a medley of a few other popular movies such as Samadhi, Sholay, Dharma etc, you can see a similar thread of father-son confrontation (the son being shot dead by his father) in Dileep/Amitabh starrer, Shakti, who was in fact released later in 1981. | | 59 | | piliche piliche anurAgam | Lawyer viSwanath | Sathyam | C Narayana Reddy | l_link | V_link | Released in 1978 and directed by SD Lal. This is the first movie (unofficial though) for Edida Nageswara Rao as a producer. The song penned by Veturi and picturized on Chandra Mohan and Jayaprada. As most of you already know the story details, I will skip that part. Some specialties of this movie: Veturi penned dialogues (shared with Jandhyala), probably one and only one time in his career; Kavita debuted with this movie; Viswanadh, who was until then making movies with the stars (mostly with Sobhan Babu), started getting a unique brand of his own from this movie with an emphasis on classical dances; Rama Prabha, who until then was just a comedian, was shown in a termagant character (as a nagging wife and an evil step-mother) for the first time; the movie was later remade by Viswanadh as "sargam" with Rishi Kapoor and Jayaprada in 1979. | | 43 | | kRushi vunTE manushulu.. | aDavi rAmuDu | KV Mahadevan | Veturi | l_link | | Released in 1977, produced by Sathyanarayana & Suryanarayana and directed by Kovelamudi Raghavendra Rao. The song penned by Veturi and picturized on NTR, Jaya Sudha and a group of kOya manushulu. I guess Raghavendra Rao started a trend of these kind of songs (a song in which different mythological/folk-lore/historical characters are portrayed by a hero) with this movie. Other examples are "chaTTAniki, nyAyAniki jarigina ee samaramlO..", "puNya bhUmi nA dESam.. namO namAmi" etc. 1977 was one of the BEST years for NTR with three sensational hits (D V S karNa, aDavi rAmuDu and yama gOla). Raghavendra Rao gave a new definition to a "successful commercial cinema" with this movie. |

Picturized on Sobhan Babu and Jaya Chitra. The tune is also a copy of the original song, "jab tak rahE.. tan mein jiya" (one of the best Asha songs that I like most and you can find it on Hindi songs page --> Dharmendra section). Sobhan Babu plays double roles (father and son) and Jaya Chitra and Deepa the heroine roles respectively. In the original, Dharmendra plays as a decoit, but here Sobhan Babu plays a hot-blooded, patriotic revolutionary (pre-independece days). He, in an unfortunate situation, is responsible for the death of a kidnapped kid (of a businessman, Gummadi) and then in penance, he leaves his own kid with Gummadi and goes to jail. This is one of those "string of flops" right before mallepuvvu, which revived his career in the late 70s (the same thing with "pADi panTalu" for Krishna). |

Picturized on Chiru and Radhika. I am not covering any movie details, as all of you are aware of them. It was the time when the melody in the Telugu music started taking the back-seat for a few reasons: Sathyam was fading out; Ramesh Naidu was confined to only very few selective movie makers; mAma was getting old; Chakravarthi was overbooked with almost 70% of the total number of Telugu movies and most of the time, he started churning out very lifeless, average tunes. It was the time we badly needed another melodius music director and it was none other than the music maestro, Ilaya Raja. Though he had been there in Telugu as a music director since 1976 (prior to that, he used to work in the orchestra of GK Venkatesh), he was just recycling his Tamil melodious tunes into Telugu every now and then. 1983 was the year he started ensconcing a secured seat in the Telugu music with movies like abhilAsha and sAgara sangamam and he continued so for the next ten years until the inane, transient, and lifeless music took over the industry. | | 37 | | chigurAkulalO.. oka chilakammA | jeevita radham | Chakravarthi | Rajasri | l_link | | Released in 1981 and directed by V Madhusudhana Rao. Picturized on Sobhan Babu and Sumalatha. Sobhan Babu and Rathi are lovers. Sobhan Babu goes to jail by taking an embezzelement blame (for father, I guess). Once he is out of jail, except his mother(who knows the truth), every one hates him. He finds a new job and the daughter of his new boss is after him. Finally, every one realizes his sacrifices and he unites back with his lady love, Rathi. Anjali Devi, Ranganadh and Sumalatha play the mother, elder brother and second heroine roles respectively. I am not sure if the movie was commercially successful or not. I guess it could be one of the last movies from one of the most successful combinations (V. Madhusudhana Rao - Sobhan Babu) in the Telugu films. |

Picturized on Chandra Mohan and Radhika. I guess this is the second movie for the pair after "Priya". KV Mahadevan was at his best with all excellent tunes in this movie. It is a triangular love story with Sarath Babu at the sacrificial end. It was a remake of a Tamil movie by Bhagya Raja and then again was remade by Bapu himself into Hindi as "Woh saath din", an Anil Kapoor starrer in 1983. Another Hindi movie, "Hum dil de chuke sanam" (1999) again has striking similaries with this movie. | | 31 | | kurrADanukoni kunukulu teesE.. | chilakamma cheppindi | MS Viswanathan | N/A | l_link | | Released in 1977 and directed by Eeranki Sarma. Picturized on Rajani Kanth and Sangeetha (Sangeetha alludes Rajani Kanth as a "kurrODu"). Sri Priya and Narayana Rao are a housemaid and an innocent servant respectively, working for a family (Sangeetha and her younger brother, Lakshmi Kanth) in a village. Sri Priya often teases the oafish searvant, but gets attracted toward the stylish Lakshmi Kanth and the latter pretends that he is in love with her. After she "slips her leg" (with Lakshmi Kanth), the arrogant Sangeetha rejects the idea of their wedding. On a parallel thread, Lakshmi Kanth introduces his friend, Rajani Kanth to his sister. Gradually Sangeetha falls in love with Rajani Kanth, but she doesnt admit it. With some support from Rajani Kanth (who wants to bring justice to Sri Priya by making Lakshmi Kanth marry her), Narayana Rao gives shelter to the pregnant Sri Priya. Having realized the golden heart of Narayana Rao, Sri Priya decides to be with him and even rejects a proposal from Lakshmi Kanth, who would eventually yield in to marry her with a hope that Rajani Kanth would in turn marry his arrogant sister. If you dont see the titles, you could be mistaken that it is a Balachandar movie for the director comes from the school of K Balachandar. Lakshmi Kanth debuted as a hero with "kanne vayasu" and after these two movies, he appeared in a few movies like Alu magalu and gharAnA donga. I guess that this one is a second Telugu movie for Rajani Kanth too (after his debut movie, "antulEni katha"). This movie was later remade into Tamil by K Bala Chandar and Kamal plays the Rajani role (as per "Hanuman" from the topic, "Discussion on Weekly Songs" in the discussion board). |

Though it is a remake of Guru Dutt starrer, Pyasa, this movie is very well made and remains as one of the best movies from Sobhan Babu. This song penned down by Veeturi, sung by Vani Jayaram and the movie dialogues by Athreya. The song picturized on Sobhan Babu and Lakshmi (and in the back-drop on Pandari Bhai and chorus as a Krishna keertana in a temple). The meaning of the song is aptly suited for the context with a one-sided love (rather platonic) by Lakshmi. This movie has a lot of specialties. Until this movie was released, Sobhan Babu had a string of flops for nearly one and half years and this movie put him back in action. The credit goes to his god-father, V Madhusudana Rao, who gave him most of his best pictures since his career beginning. The natural acting of Sobhan Babu (who gets ditched by his lover, Jaya Sudha and by his own brothers) and Lakshmi (who acts as a hooker) in the movie is simply awesome. Another best thing about the movie is the songs, composed by Chakravarthi and I consider this movie to be his BEST piece of work among his 900-plus movies. I first watched it in my 5th grade and did not understand the story.. but when I watched it again nearly after ten years (during my engineering days), the movie (in particular, Sobhan Babu with his melancholy expressions) haunted me for a quite long time since then. |
